On Bicycling Magazine’s website, there’s a slideshow based on a story I did in the January/February issue about Scott Cutshall and how a bike changed his life. While the slideshow’s title (“I Lost 331 Pounds“) may look like a bad internet add, and it doesn’t do justice to Scott’s achievment, don’t be
fooled. This is the real thing: A story of will power, of love, and of so many things that are wrong, and right, with our society. It’s the story of how one man carefully and doggedly chose his own path. The piece isn’t online yet, but you can see the photos here. (Postscript: The story can be found here now.)
Thanks Tim. Very good to hear! Glad you found a bike when you needed one too.
A truly amazing story. I have read a lot of inspiring stories in bicycle magazines—really amazing stories—but somehow for me, this one tops them all. It just strikes so deeply. As a cyclist, I have found almost by accident how vital exercise is to our health, both mental and physical. I think this is what Scott discovered too, how the joy of bicycling reinforces you psychologically as well as physically. I feel that cycling saved my life while I was helping my mother as she was decaying and ultimately dying of Alzheimer’s. Thanks for an incredible piece of journalism.
Brian and Chris: Thanks so much for the kind words, and for taking the time to write. Scott’s is a great story, and it inspired me even as I was working on it. I’m not sure if/when it will be online, but in that event I’ll definitely put a link on here, and let you know.
I just read this in Bicycling. What a great story! You really captured the essence of the complexity and struggle in Scott in a really concise way. Good inspiration and a cool story.

I read the magazine on the way home yesterday and this article was the best part of the whole thing cover to cover.
