Niall Ferguson is in the news again. I’ve always had a lot of respect for the historian, who I interviewed for the Atlantic Online a few years ago on the benefit of empires, such as they are. It seems like he’s everywhere these days. Recently, on a flight back from Senegal, I watched his documentary on the Ascent of Money. As always, he was thoughtful, lucid and, it struck me, intellectually honest. It reminded me of our chat about accepeting the world’s hatred, America’s ‘flawed assessment of indigenous sentiment’ and why 9/11 was the turning point at which history failed to turn.
