Historic Photos from the Canoe Races on the Mississippi River

Last year when I was researching the Paul Bunyan Canoe Derby for Pushing the River, I came across so many great historic photos, most of which hadn’t been seen in decades.

Some of these appeared in my book. Others I showed at talks. But many more haven’t been seen in public.

As we approach the end of the year, I thought I would share some of my favorite photos here.

A special thanks to the Landwehr family for sharing their color photos of Roy and Dan Landwehr in the 1959 derby.

These are arranged chronologically, and include the 1919 Mississippi Marathon, the 1928 Diamond Jublilee Canoe Marathon, and the Paul Bunyan Canoe Derby 1940-1960.

More about all the races in Pushing the River: An Epic Battle, a Lost History, a Near Death, and Other True Canoeing Stories.
