In Pushing the River, I tell the stories of the 2021 and the 2023 Guinness World Records for paddling the length of the Mississippi River. 2021, the record was set by team Mile Marker Zero, led by K.J. Millhone. In 2023, the record was set by team Missississippi Speed Record, led by Scott Miller.
Earlier this year, Millhone posted that his record-breaking canoe, a Wenonah Minnesota 4, was for sale. It appears to have found a buyer, because in June, it was entered into the Mississippi River 145 Race by Jon Newcomb & Dann Peterson.
As it happens, the 2023 record breaking “Mighty Duffus” (also a Wenonah Minnesota 4) was racing in the Mississippi River 145 too, paddled by MSR support crew members Brad Sjostrom, Ryan Church, Moose Dougherty and Tom Dougherty.
This time, Newcomb and Peterson’s canoe took the win, finishing in 33 hours, 27 minutes and 28 seconds. The MSR crew finished a couple hours back in 35 hours, 43 minutes and 29 seconds. (Results here.)
Here are some photos of the two canoes, sent to me by Moose Dougherty:
